Better | Following Jesus Well

Better | Following Jesus Well

We want to win at home. Relationships are complicated, hard, and at times hurtful. When God made us He made us for community. It is one of the primary ways we are to experience Him, learn about Him, and grow in Him. The family unit was intended to be the greatest expression of this.

R.A.M. (relationship attachment model) - John Van Epp
There are 5 components that need to happen in a particular order so that
a solid relationship forms.
Know
Trust
Rely
Commit
Touch

Know. This is the result of sharing thoughts, dreams, feelings,
and experiences day to day. It’s talking about the quality of communication.
Think about how circumstances change in a relationship. Without proper knowledge from constant communication, distance will form and affect the other four components.

Trust. This is the feeling of confidence and security that flows out of what you think about who you are in the relationship with. Trust doesn’t
come from what you know but how you think about what you know.

Rely. To rely refers to the way we depend on each other to meet
each other’s needs and wants, to fulfill life’s responsibilities, and
to love and play together to make our experiences memorable.
Trust is more about what we think, and rely is more about what we do.

Commit. We might immediately go to the vows we made at the
altar but that’s only the the beginning.
There are three commitments: Promise, Priority, and Presence.
You might stay true to your promise, but it must be a daily priority.
Presence is carrying your partner in your heart. Wherever you are,
it’s as if they are there.

Touch. This is romance, affection, and intimacy expressed through
touch. There are chemicals like oxytocin, dopamine, and
vasopressin released into your bloodstream designed to wire you
for permanent bonding.
It doesn’t matter if you’re single, staying single, engaged, married, divorced, or a single parent…we all have to start in the same place.

No matter what we desire to do, have, or achieve in life, this has to come first. The stronger the foundation, the more stable whatever is built upon it.

That foundation insures that as those other things come and they will have what is necessary to withstand the tests of time and circumstance.
