Sit With the Discomfort

Anxiety makes us want to run. Run from our thoughts, our feelings, our pain. Healing happens when we stop running and start sitting with God in the midst of discomfort.

Oftentimes, we look towards alcohol (or fill in the blank) like a tool to dull the pain. But if we dig deeper, we’ll see our relationship with drinking, or any other temporary fix, isn’t the “problem” as much as an ineffective "solution" to deal with the discomfort of the moment. We can be assured that peace doesn’t come from numbing or ejecting out of our own lives, it comes from being known and staying present.

God doesn’t avoid our pain. When we are hurting or broken hearted, He draws near. He meets us in the middle. The hard moment isn’t the enemy but rather an invitation to receive a peace that passes our understanding. Oftentimes, we can’t understand the depth of peace possible to us without the absence of it. It’s a gift we can open and receive at any time. Jesus clearly said in John 14:27 that He would leave His peace with us and freely give it to us. He reminds us it’s different from the world’s version. He comforts us knowing our hearts are prone to take on anxiety. He says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Prayer:
God, help me sit with You in the discomfort. I don’t want to run anymore, I want to be held and comforted by Your gentle, tender touch. You said in this world we would experience trials but You promise to never leave me. Thank you for Your reassurance!

Journal Prompt:
What uncomfortable feeling have you been trying to avoid?

What might it look like to face it with God?
