Bet no sestās stundas tapa tumšs pār visu zemi līdz devītai stundai. Bet ap devīto stundu Jēzus sauca stiprā balsī: "Ēli, Ēli, lamā zabahtani?" Tas ir: "Mans Dievs, Mans Dievs, kāpēc Tu esi Mani atstājis?" Bet daži no tiem, kas tur stāvēja, kad tie to dzirdēja, sacīja: "Šis sauc Eliju." Un tūlīt viens no tiem aizskrēja, paņēma sūkli, pildīja to ar etiķi, uzsprauda to niedrē un dzirdīja Viņu. Bet citi sacīja: "Pagaidi, redzēsim, vai Ēlija nāks un glābs Viņu." Bet Jēzus atkal iekliedzās stiprā balsī un izlaida Savu garu.
