Speaking to Your Soul

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is talk to yourself.

Not out of confusion — but out of conviction. The psalmists did it regularly. When their emotions were pulling them toward despair, they interrupted themselves with truth.

Psalm 42:5 is one of the most honest verses in the Bible: "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?" The psalmist doesn't pretend that the darkness isn't there. He names it. But then he turns it —"...hope in God, for I will yet praise him." He preaches to himself before the feeling changes. The decision to hope comes before the emotion catches up.

This is called Hiphil, where one uses words to self-instruct. Just like "bless the LORD oh my soul and forget not all His benefits" - Psalm 103:1-2

Psalm 77 shows us what this looks like in real time. Asaph is in distress. He can't sleep. He's crying out and finding no comfort. And then, in verse 11, something shifts: "I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago."He doesn't wait for God to show up differently. He recalls what God has already done — and that becomes his anchor.

In the night, when feelings are loudest and faith feels thin, speak truth to your soul. Remind yourself of what you know, not just what you feel. INSTRUCT YOURSELF FROM GOD'S WORD

Reflection: What is one thing God has done in your life — big or small — that you can recall tonight as evidence of His faithfulness? Speak it out loud if you need to.

Midnight Contemplations

Night often brings quiet, reflection, and sometimes restless thoughts. When the noise of the day fades, our minds replay conversations, worries, and unanswered questions. But Scripture shows that the night can become a powerful moment of communion with God. Midnight Contemplations explores how believers can use the stillness of the night to reflect, pray, meditate on God’s Word, and speak truth to their souls. Through the examples of the psalmists, this devotional invites you to turn late-night thoughts into intentional moments of prayer, worship, and trust in God.
