Who Is He? Who Are We?

At the beginning of the year, how many times do you make a goal for the new year that always ends up falling through the cracks, and you never end up accomplishing whatever that goal may be? It can be pretty frustrating and even annoying. Almost like making a promise not to turn back to that one thing that constantly makes us fall back into sin. Leaving us stuck in a never-ending cycle of tripping, falling, and dwelling. The dwelling often goes overlooked and becomes baggage we carry along with us. Baggage we are too prideful to ever address and let go of.

Within this passage, we see the beauty of the Father's guiding hand in teaching us about redemption through renewal. Redemption comes from a place of humility and curiosity. Humility isn't always how we picture it, with a crowd of people all staring and laughing at you, but rather humility starts with a single person, and breaking the very expectations you hold against yourself. Where you face the Lord by yourself and decide on your own that you want to follow his path over your own. Humility is simply saying that we can not do this on our own and we are in need of a savior. We see this with Nicodemus, who was a “ruler of the Jews,” meaning he held an influential position, responsible for upholding religious tradition, overseeing legal matters, and serving as a teacher. With this responsibility for him to be seen talking with Jesus, he would have lost the status he held. He risked the status he held to seek more of who Jesus is. Are you willing to break your own expectations for the Lord?

Curiosity draws us closer to the Father, bringing our questions to Him rather than turning away. He welcomes us with a willingness to sit with us and meet us in our curiosity. Nicodemus did not fear curiosity; rather, he brought it to Jesus. Let’s ask ourselves, ‘Where can our curiosity lead us?’ Our curiosity leads us to seek more of Him and to find more of Him. Let’s seek more of the Lord and dive deeper into the curiosity of who He is. Before that, we need to humble ourselves before the Lord to then have an encounter of curiosity.

The Lord does not want to condemn us; rather, He wants to invite us to a partnership with Him. Set a goal before the Lord of becoming more curious about who He is. Who is His character? Bring your curiosity before the Lord.
