Who Is He? Who Are We?

Have you ever felt frustrated that no matter how many times you explain something, people just don’t get it? You try to say it in a hundred different ways, but they always come to the wrong conclusion.

I imagine that’s how Jesus felt in this passage. Crowds followed Him for miles, desperate for answers, drawn by His miracles and power. Yet when He offers them the true answer, the one thing that could satisfy their deepest hunger, they complain. Jesus tells them that the fulfillment they seek is found in His body and His blood, but they can’t see Him for who He truly is. To them, He’s just “the son of Joseph,” a carpenter from Nazareth.

The people want something greater, but not what Jesus offers. They want their physical needs met, their earthly desires fulfilled. They’ve seen His signs and want to understand, but when He reveals what it means to truly receive eternal satisfaction, to believe in Him and find life in Him, they turn away.

We’re not so different. We grow tired, distracted, and restless in our search for fulfillment. We chase after the next goal, the next success, the next feeling of significance, only to end up emptier than before. Even in moments when we encounter God’s presence, like in worship or community, that sense of wholeness can fade as the week wears on. The world constantly tells us where to look for meaning: in careers, relationships, accomplishments, and possessions. And slowly, we begin to believe that Jesus alone isn’t enough.

But in John 6, Jesus gently calls us back. He says, “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life” (v. 27). He invites us to dwell in His presence, to be filled with His Spirit rather than our striving. True fulfillment isn’t found in what we do, but in who we belong to.

Jesus is the Bread of Life. Everything the world offers will leave us hungry again, but in Him we find satisfaction that never fades. Our works, our successes, our plans, none of them compare to the joy of knowing Him and being made whole in Him.

  1. What “food” are you currently working for that will never satisfy? How might Jesus be inviting you to find fulfillment in Him instead?
  2. When have you experienced true satisfaction in Christ, and what helps you return to that place when you start feeling empty again?
