Blessed Are the Spiraling: 7-Days to Finding True Significance When Life Sends You Spiraling

You Don't Have To Be a Rancher

Sometimes the spiral doesn’t come from suffering—it comes from the slow realization that the life you’re living might not actually be your life. Maybe it was handed to you. Expected of you. Assumed for you. Maybe it worked for a while…until suddenly it didn’t.

That’s what happened to a man in our church who had been a rancher his entire life. It was the family business, the obvious path, the unspoken script. But at thirty-nine, in the middle of a midlife spiral, he realized something he’d never dared to say out loud: I don’t want to ranch.

The crisis didn’t create the truth—it revealed it.

And that’s often what spiraling does. It shakes loose the assumptions you’ve been living under and forces you to ask the question you’ve avoided for years:
Am I doing what God wants me to do—or what someone else expected me to do?

When his wife finally said, “Do something or stop talking about it,” he did the unthinkable. He admitted what he actually wanted. “I think I want to be an electrician.” Five years later, he was one—because five years is long enough to completely change your life. Not through giant leaps, but through steady, humble, faithful steps. Baby steps.

Your spiraling may feel like chaos, but it might be clarity. It might be God nudging you to reevaluate the path you’re on. Not recklessly, not selfishly, but honestly. You don’t have to stay in a story that isn’t yours. You don’t have to live out a script someone else wrote. You don’t have to be a rancher.

God is not asking you to overhaul your life overnight. He’s asking you to listen. To be open. To take one small step of obedience toward the life He’s actually calling you to live.

Your spiral could be the doorway to your truest calling.

Prayer:
Lord, if I’ve been living out expectations that aren’t from You, show me. Give me courage to ask honest questions and take obedient steps. Align my desires with Your calling, and help me trust You with whatever comes next. Amen.

Today:
Ask God this question and write down the very first thought that surfaces: “If I could take one small step toward what You’re calling me to do, what would it be?” Write it out and pray over it.
