When We Can't Go Up and To the Right

Most of us grow up believing life should move “up and to the right”—progressing like a graph that only trends higher: more success, more clarity, more strength, more opportunity. And when it doesn’t? When the line dips instead of climbs, when your body changes, your plans stall, your dreams shift, or you find yourself somewhere you never expected, you might feel like you’ve blown it. Like something must be wrong with you, or with your life, or with God’s timing.

But here’s the truth: Growth isn’t linear. It’s seasonal. It’s patterned. And it’s purposeful.

Psalm 90 doesn’t tell us to ignore our limits or pretend we’re invincible and always on an upward trend. It invites us to number our days—to let the brevity of life drive us, not into despair, but into wisdom. The point is not to live in fear of running out of time; it’s to live more intentionally with the time you do have. The goal of life is not to keep accelerating; it’s to keep aligning. Not to outrun time, but to steward it.

You don’t have to climb your way to meaning. You just have to surrender your life as it actually is–not the future you imagined, not the timeline you planned, not the version of yourself you hoped would exist by now, or the progress you wish you had made. Trust that God can work with honesty better than He can work with illusion.

You can’t go “up and to the right” forever. But you can walk with the One who knows exactly how many days you have and how to fill each one with purpose.

Numbering your days doesn’t mean obsessing over death. It means letting the reality of limits form you, not frighten you. It means accepting that dips are a part of the journey and that God does some of His deepest work when the line is no longer rising. It means letting eternity give shape to today. It means asking: If my life is a vapor, how do I want to spend this breath?

Prayer:
Lord, teach me to see my limits not as failures but as invitations. Help me number my days with honesty and hope. Free me from the pressure to constantly rise, and teach me to walk wisely with You in the season I’m actually in. Amen.

Today:
Take five quiet minutes and ask: Where am I resisting reality instead of embracing it with God? Write down one thing you sense God inviting you to accept, not fight, today.
