Day 3: The Lord My Counsellor

As we journey through Psalm 16, these verses invite us into a deeper awareness of God’s voice guiding us — not only in moments of prayer or Scripture reading, but through the quiet hours of our lives. David reveals a beautiful truth here: God is our Counsellor.

Think for a moment about someone you deeply trust — a mentor, teacher, or friend — who gives you wise and timely advice. David says, “I praise the Lord who counsels me.” He recognises that the wisdom he needs does not come from within himself, but from God’s presence speaking into his life.

How does God counsel us? David says, “Even at night my heart instructs me.” (Psalm 16:7 NIV) In the stillness of the night, when distractions fade and our hearts are quiet, God’s Word continues to work within us. When we fill our minds with Scripture, His wisdom begins to surface even in unexpected moments — a gentle prompting, a reminder, a sense of direction that suddenly becomes clear. The Holy Spirit draws from what we’ve sown in our hearts from the Word and uses it to guide us.

This is why David says, “I keep my eyes always on the Lord.” (Psalm 16:8 NIV) It’s a posture of focus and surrender. Just as a radio antenna is tuned to receive a clear signal, so our hearts are tuned to God’s frequency when we fix our attention on Him. Each day becomes an opportunity to ask, “Lord, what is Your counsel for today? What do You want to show me?”

When we look to the New Testament, we see how Jesus fulfils this truth. In John 14:6 NIV, Jesus declares, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” These words echo Psalm 16. Jesus is the way — our access to God’s presence and wisdom. He is the truth — the light that gives understanding to our choices. And He is the life — the very breath and strength that sustains us.

When Jesus lives within us, His counsel is not distant or abstract. It becomes deeply personal. His Spirit teaches us, corrects us, and strengthens us from within. Just as David says, “With Him at my right hand, I will not be shaken,” we can live with unshakable confidence.

The “right hand” in ancient times was a symbol of strength and victory. To have God at your right hand means that He is your defender, your strength in battle, and your assurance in uncertainty. No matter what may come — confusion, fear, or opposition — you are anchored in His presence.

As you move through this season, may this be your confession:
“The Lord counsels me. His Word fills my thoughts. His wisdom shapes my choices. With Him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

Let His counsel quiet your heart tonight. Let His truth illuminate your path tomorrow. And let His life fill you with peace that cannot be moved.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being my Counsellor. Flood my heart with Your wisdom and help me to keep my eyes fixed on You. Let Your truth guide my decisions, and may Your presence make me unshakable in every circumstance. Amen.
