Armor of God
In medieval times, soldiers would put on their full armor to protect themselves from archers and the long swords of opponents. The armor was meant to ensure long-term survival on the battlefield. Similarly, in the game of hockey, we put on our gear, or armor, to protect us from the elements on the ice. Whether we are on a breakaway trying to score or playing defense to prevent a goal, our gear is worn for both offense and defense, but more importantly, to protect us from injury when crashing into the boards or colliding with the opposing team.
Just like medieval soldiers and hockey players, we fight an everyday battle. If not equipped with the proper armor, we are unable to protect ourselves against the devil's schemes, and we too may become an injured or fallen soldier and ultimately a victim of eternal life in Hell. It is important that we clothe ourselves (Romans 13:14) with the full armor of God. In the game of hockey, if we are missing one piece of gear, it is hard to play the game effectively. If Christians do not start our day by putting each piece of armor on, we are vulnerable and exposed to the devil's wittiness. The Good News for us is that we do not need to fight these battles alone. Over 2000 years ago, “God demonstrated his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Christ fought and won the ultimate battle in our place through His precious blood the as shed for us on the cross.
Everyday may seem like a battle where we fight against the temptations of this world, but remember Christ said in John 15:26, “I will send you the Helper from the Father. The Helper is the Spirit of Truth” and that we must remember “in the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
Take Paul’s advice, and each day let's put on the full armor of God.
- What are some practical ways you can put on the armor of God each day?
- How can we use the armor of God to protect our loved ones who are believers?
- What about those who are not believers?
- Pray to God to equip you with the armor of God each day.
