Build a routine of talking with God

In 1829, George Müller arrived in England at the age of 24. Before then, he had been living in Germany, and as a teenager, his life consisted of stealing, lying, gambling and drinking his way to an early grave. Then, aged 20, he went off to university to study Theology. He was still living it up, but one evening went to a small and insignificant prayer meeting and decided to give his life to Jesus.

After George Müller came to England, he spent about 20 years working with the local church, building and supporting orphanages housing thousands of children, and he was well known for being a man who had forged a deep and committed life routine of prayer. He would pray each day for the needs of the orphans in his care, and on many occasions, as he finished praying with empty shelves and nothing on the table to offer the children, there would be a knock at the door, and he would be given exactly what was needed. This happened many times.

This is a deep and lasting routine of prayer, a habit and pattern, not just an afterthought when the trouble came, this was a man who made prayer part of his daily life. He kept journals, and below are some of his daily prayers. Picture the table at which he sat praying, the faces of the children watching him, waiting for food:

“Dear Father, we thank You for what You are going to give us to eat.”

“Lord, our eyes are upon You. We have no other hope. We are needy; be pleased to help us.”

“Lord, You know the situation. Come to our help. Let it be seen that You are our God and that You hear prayer.”

“I hope in God, I pray on, and look yet for the answer. Believing, I shall be satisfied.”

What you set in place now can become an anchor, a routine, and a place you go to in the storms and cold of winter, and in the warmth and ease of summer.

We have a bible man too, who lived like this, Daniel. In the reading we selected for this study, Daniel is shown as a praying man. He has a routine and habit of prayer in his life, just like George.

We see this in other characters in the bible too, King David had a routine to ‘enquire of the Lord’, to seek God, evening and morning. Jesus showed us this routine and pattern too, regularly withdrawing to be alone with God.

  • What routines do you need to set in place now that in years to come will have a profound impact on your life and faith in Jesus?

Walk in the Narrows

A 10-day study designed to help 18–24-year-old men build faith and share it boldly. This is not a ready-made devotional but a set of signposts. You must make the journey, set aside time, and do the work yourself. These are not quick quotes or slogans but waypoints to navigate—markers with strength to anchor you. Each requires digging, uncovering, and testing against truth. You will need to sift through distractions, wash away cultural soil, and hold discoveries to the light. Produced by CVM (Christian Vision for Men), a UK charity introducing men to Jesus Christ.
