Without Measure

Over the course of this reading plan, we have explored God’s abundant generosity through His creation, with His presence, and by His Spirit. We have seen that we belong to a God who is an eager and joyful giver – “a Good Father who knows how to give good gifts to His children.”

We see invitation after invitation to go to God and to ask of Him – “to make our requests known to Him,” we read in Philippians. God is good and faithful to hear us and bless us when His will and our desires align.

One request that we can be confident is in line with God’s will is found in James 1:5, where we are called to ask for wisdom. Who doesn’t want more wisdom?! James says that when we ask, God gives generously to all without a second thought. This generous offer of wisdom is available at any point and in any circumstance.

It’s worth mentioning that James’s invitation comes on the heels of the call to “consider it all joy when we experience various trials, knowing that the testing of our faith produces endurance.” Although we absolutely ought to ask for wisdom regularly, there’s a unique opportunity to grow in wisdom through the trials. How kind of God to bless us with both wisdom and joy in hardship.

And, if we are not experiencing the joy, we can ask God to help us see the grace in our circumstances. That posture in and of itself is wise. We can ask for eyes to see and hearts to discern where the blessing is. God will give wisdom generously. Your faith will be built up. Your yoke will lighten with the deepening awareness of God’s nearness.

He’s with you always. There is fullness of joy in His presence. At His right hand are pleasures forevermore. Feast on Him and come to Him with your whole self and your circumstances. He delights in pointing out to you the abundance of His grace and goodness.

As you continue to engage in the Scriptures in the days, months, and years to come, look for all the evidence of God’s abundant generosity in the passages. Sit with them, talk to God about them, seek this generous God, and ask the Holy Spirit to make you generous like Your Father. Then get ready for an adventure of faith – the life that is truly life.

Prayer:

Father, I praise You for You are an abundant God, rich in generosity. Forgive me for the ways that I have treated You as though You are miserly and calculated. Holy Spirit, continue to highlight for me all Your generous ways in my life and in the world. Jesus, I desire to follow You more deeply. I long to know You and be known by You more fully. I do desire the life that is truly life. Continue to reshape and reform me as I seek to walk in step with Your Spirit and reflect Your generous heart to the world. Amen.
