What Does the Bible Say About Alcohol?

Key Scripture: “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18)

Alcohol itself isn’t sin—but it can lead to it. Alcohol shows up throughout Scripture, but so do warnings about misuse. The issue isn’t the drink—it’s the heart behind it. Drunkenness, addiction, and causing others to stumble all dishonor Christ. God calls us to self-control, so nothing but His Spirit rules over us.

Live It Challenge: Reflect honestly: What has too much control in your life—alcohol, social media, or something else? Share one verse about freedom in Christ with a friend as a reminder that Jesus alone satisfies.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Have you ever felt that alcohol has drawn you away from your values or changed your behavior?
  2. Is your heart open to letting God shape your convictions on alcohol—or are you holding on to your own view?
  3. Are there any areas where alcohol, or anything else, is leading you to lose self-control?

Additional Scripture:

  • Proverbs 25:28
  • Ephesians 5:18
  • 1 Corinthians 6:12
  • Galatians 5:19-21
  • Romans 14:21
