Forgiveness Restores Relationships

Forgiveness is one of the hardest things we’re called to do. C.S. Lewis once said: “To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you.” Heavy stuff! It goes to show: it’s not easy to let go of hurt, and it’s even harder to ask for forgiveness when we’ve been the one who caused pain. But Jesus makes it clear: true healing often begins with reconciliation.

In The Chosen (Season 3, Episode 2), we see Matthew take a bold step—not only confessing to his parents but also seeking to mend what was broken. His father, though hesitant at first, chooses to forgive him. It’s a powerful reminder that while forgiveness can’t erase the past, it can build a new future. Just like with real wounds, emotional scars can be visible for a long time–perhaps even a lifetime. But they can heal, not just as reminders of past pain–but of times when healing took place.

Jesus teaches that before we bring our worship to God, we should seek peace with others (Matthew 5:23-24). Forgiveness isn’t about ignoring wrongdoing; it’s about releasing bitterness and choosing love. Is there someone in your life you need to forgive—or someone from whom you need to seek forgiveness? Take a step today, no matter how small, toward reconciliation–even if it’s a step toward yourself.
