Trusting God with Your Future

When I was getting ready to leave home for college, my mum sat me down for a heart-to-heart. She wanted to guide me on how to be a wise young man while I was away. I listened politely, but in my mind, I brushed her off. She’s from a different generation, I thought. I know what’s best for me.

Not long after, I began spending time with someone I thought was fun and cool. Deep down, I knew my mum wouldn’t have approved of this friendship. But I trusted my own judgment. I thought I knew what was best for me.

Then something happened that I did not see coming.

One afternoon, while this friend and I were walking into town, a car full of boys pulled up beside us. The moment the car stopped, my friend sprinted away. I was left standing there, confused and alone. The boys came straight toward me, demanding to know where he had gone. Before I could respond, they began hitting me.

I am thankful that one of them recognized me from our childhood and asked the others to stop. They apologized and even walked me back to my hostel.

That whole encounter shifted something in me. It made me confront a truth I had been avoiding—I thought I knew what was best for me, but I really did not.

I realized that to know what’s truly best for me, I would have to know the past, the present, and the future. But the future, I cannot know! My knowledge is limited to the past and the present, but only God knows the future.

Often, we rely on our own understanding, forgetting how little we know about what’s ahead. We see a moment. God sees the whole story. He knows where we’ve come from, where we are now, and what lies ahead. And because of that, He knows what is best for us.

In Jeremiah 1:5, God tells the prophet that before he was formed in the womb, God knew him. In Jeremiah 29:11, we are reminded that His plans are good—full of hope and purpose. These are not just comforting words; they are a powerful truth. When we trust Him, we place our future in the hands of the One who already knows how it unfolds.

If you are unsure about what lies ahead, take comfort in this: God already knows. He knows what is best for you, far better than you ever could. He sees beyond your questions, beyond your plans, and beyond this moment.

You can trust Him with your future, because He holds it in His hands. And His hands are always good.

Application Questions:

  • What are areas of your life where you are finding it hard to trust God for?
  • How would it help you to remember that God already knows your future?

Prayer:

"Lord, I often try to take control, thinking I know what’s best. Forgive me. Help me surrender to Your wisdom and walk confidently in Your plan. Amen."
