Ultreia et Suseia

As you continue forward and upward in this journey with Jesus, take a moment to breathe and rest in God’s presence with you.

The journey may be difficult at times, but when we keep our eyes on the destination, we are able to press on “ultreia et suseia”—further, and higher. Barrett challenges us to remember that our destination is becoming like Jesus: “Pilgrimage for pilgrimage sake matters little. But the person and the character of the pilgrimage says everything. For James, Jesus mattered. And He is everything for us too.”

Read Philippians 3:13 slowly and thoughtfully. “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (NIV).

Forgetting what is behind, straining toward what is ahead. Ultreia et suseia.

Read this passage again slowly. Can you forget what is behind? Ask God to help you.

Read it again. What are you straining toward? What is the prize for which God has called you?

Pray and talk with God what you are learning about your journey becoming like Jesus. Ask the Lord what you must leave behind, and how you can continue to strive heavenward. And rest, knowing he has already taken hold of you.

Impulses for the Way: 30 Days on the Camino De Santiago

What if following Jesus was like walking the Camino de Santiago—dusty paths, vineyards, mountain passes, and ancient Roman roads? *Impulses for the Way* is a 30-day, video devotional filmed across 800km of this historic pilgrimage. Barrett Harkins, who lives in Santiago and serves pilgrims daily, shares stories from the trail, Scripture reflections, and prayers that explore restlessness, forgiveness, hope, and radical grace. Whether you’re on the Camino or navigating daily life, these short videos invite you to take the next step with Jesus—listening to the Spirit’s whispers and remembering this truth: you never walk alone.
