Retirement: Top 5 Challenges in the First Years

DAY 2 OF 7

Challenge 1:
Lack of Purpose / Boredom

You’ve earned this season. You’ve worked hard, stayed committed, and pushed through decades of responsibility. Retirement should feel like a reward. But if you really think about it, it also brings an unexpected emptiness.

It’s not about keeping busy – you can always find something to do. Travel, hobbies, leisure activities that you’ve put off for far too long. But, it’s deeper than that. What creeps in isn’t just boredom and filling the time. So these questions pop up in the back of your mind:

Do I still matter?
What’s my purpose now?
Am I even needed anywhere?
Does anyone even care?

You were needed before – at work, at home, in your community. People came to you for advice, for leadership, for decisions. Now things are quieter. Nobody’s calling you, texting you or seeking your opinion.

Suddenly, your sense of purpose is gone. Other than chasing after those few things you thought would be so fun and rewarding, you now wake up with no clear mission or purpose other than checking off a few things on your nice-to-do list. Hmmmm.

This is one of retirement’s most overlooked challenges. Not the lack of activity – but the loss of identity.

But here’s the truth you need to hold onto: Your purpose was never tied to your job. Your calling didn’t end with your career. Check back in with this verse:

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10 NIV

God still has a plan for you. Your life is not aimless now. In fact, God may have prepared your most meaningful work for this very season. And God is already there, waiting for you to step in.

Likely your new purpose won’t come with a paycheck or a title. It might not even come with a boss or any stakeholders to cheer you on. But your new purpose – the reason God has brought you to this season in life – is there and it carries eternal value.

Compared to your working life, the new season might look simple, almost like it doesn’t matter.

But it does. Simple things like conversations that point people toward hope. Passing wisdom that you have picked up over the years on to others. Acts of service that build the Kingdom of God. Time spent to help that no one sees but God Himself. From God’s persepctive, there’s much to do and He has brought you to the very place where He has already prepared the good works for you to do.

The verse from Ephesians spells that out, and this verse makes it clear for you even in your final season:

“They will still bear fruit in old age; they will stay fresh and green.” – Psalm 92:14 NIV

Look at it this way… Retirement isn’t a wind-down, but it’s a re-commissioning, a re-start, a launch into an entirely new calling. Even if you never prepared for it, and you don’t know yet what it may look like, God is ready for you. Just reach out and ask:

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” – Proverbs 16:3 NIV

So the question for these days is this:

What role does God want me to now play in bringing the goodness of His Kingdom to earth?

If you feel adrift, don’t settle. Ask God to show you what He’s still inviting you into. The answer might surprise you – and reawaken something inside you that’s been quiet for too long.

Reflection Questions:

  • Have I confused my job title with my God-given purpose?
  • What might God still want to do through me in this next chapter?

Prayer:

God, thank You that my value does not depend on my career, my job title, my pay or position. Help me to know this in these days, especially as all of those have finished. In this new season, help me rediscover the purpose You’ve written into my life. Show me where I can still bear fruit and serve others for Your glory. Amen.
