Retirement – Why Are You Still Working? Is That Really God’s Plan?

DAY 7 OF 7

CONTROL: Is That Why You’re Still Working?

You’ve done well. You’ve managed life carefully. You’ve made smart choices, worked hard, and taken care of the people who mattered most. You’ve been in control – and it’s served you well.

But now, as retirement comes into focus, something inside you resists letting go.

You’re not afraid, exactly. And you’re not unwilling to serve. You just prefer to stay in the space you know. The familiar rhythm, the dependable paycheck, the structured days. There’s no urgency to move on, because nothing’s really forcing you to.

And if you’re honest, there’s comfort in that. Predictability, stability, and control.

But God isn’t calling you into this next season so you can maintain control. He’s inviting you to release it.

“Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9

You may not realize it, but control can quietly become the barrier between where you are and where God wants to lead you next.

The hesitation to leave your role, the quiet resistance to change, the tendency to wait until every detail is clear – these aren’t neutral choices. They are forms of self-reliance, ways of staying in charge.

But you’re not here to stay in charge anymore. Remember how Jesus taught us to pray?

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” – Matthew 6:10

This prayer is no longer theoretical for you. At this stage of life, it’s a call to realignment. A time to shift your focus – from providing for your family to advancing the purposes of God. From building a career to building eternal treasure. From focusing on yourself to focusing on others. From just staying busy to becoming truly useful.

You’re not just nearing retirement. You’re nearing home.

And these final years? They matter more than ever.

Not because you have something to prove. But because you now have the clarity, the time, and the maturity to live with eternal intention.

This is the season where you lead by example – not by authority, but by obedience.

You’re showing your children, your peers, and your community what it looks like to finish well. To let go of what’s comfortable. To stop clinging to your own plans. And to trust that God still has work for you – even now. Following the steps He has laid out for you:

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” – Proverbs 16:9

So it’s time to release the grip. To let go of the need to control the pace, the plan, and the outcome. No more focus on being comfortable, but on being faithful. Especially in this your last season.

Retirement isn’t a reward. It’s your chance to do good and finish well.

The glory of heaven is getting closer. But as long as you’re still able – build the Kingdom. And trust the One who’s been guiding you all along.

It is a blessing that God has brought you this far. Now make it count!
