Retirement – Why Are You Still Working? Is That Really God’s Plan?

DAY 4 OF 7

WORK BUDDIES: Are They Why You’re Still Working?

You may not say it out loud, but for many, this one runs deeper than money or purpose.

For many people, the real reason they keep working has nothing to do with money or calling – it’s about people.

You’ve built a work family. You know the rhythm. You feel useful. The idea of walking away from that daily connection? It feels like walking away from your place in the world.

So you stay – not because the work is all that meaningful anymore, but because it feels safe, familiar, and comfortable.

But here’s the truth: even good things – like workplace community – can become idols when they keep us from God’s greater purpose.

If God is calling you into something new, and you’re staying in your job just to hold onto your social circle, then your relationships have taken a higher priority than your obedience.

The early church faced something similar. As life shifted, some believers began drifting from spiritual community. That’s why Hebrews reminds us:

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” – Hebrews 10:25

God cares deeply about community – but not just any community. He wants you in the one that advances His Kingdom.

That’s what this is really about. You’ve had a long career. Maybe a good one. But ask yourself this:

How does my work help build God’s Kingdom? Is it really the most effective use of my time for God’s purposes?

Maybe your company or organization is doing great things for others or even for God. And maybe you’ve been very faithful in your role there, and that’s good. But now that you're free to step away, maybe it's time to stop maintaining and start multiplying. To get out of the way so others can flourish, to set yourself free so that you can grow.

Because God isn’t just calling you out of something – He’s calling you into something. Something even better than you could ever do at your work.

God is inviting you to come alongside Him and use everything you’ve learned so far – your skills, your wisdom, your experience – to do something far more effective for His Kingdom than you ever could sitting in that same old chair. So it’s time to up your game and put your faith into a higher gear – and then watch what happens:

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

As you step out in faith, God will provide the others. Like-minded people as new co-workers. Fellow volunteers as new friends. An expanded social circle you never knew existed. People who will walk with you and join in your calling.

Your old work crew served its purpose. And if your job is only bearing limited fruit for God's Kingdom, then it’s time to stop hanging on and set yourself free.

Free to explore what God has for you now. Free to connect to something better.
