Walking with Confidence: Trusting the Lord, Our Shield
Confidence in the Lord's response to prayer transforms how we journey through life. Each step becomes steady, grounded in the assurance that God hears us. The psalmist affirms this from personal experience: “Blessed be the LORD! For He has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy” (Psalm 28:6).
Encountering the Lord's goodness is more than comfort—it reveals His character and deepens our relationship with Him. The psalmist clarifies that the Lord's presence and protection are the foundations of his unshakable confidence.
God shields us, intercepting everything aimed at harming us so we can move forward, however slowly, with the assurance of His care. When the psalm describes the Lord as a shield, it refers not to a small, hand-held device used in hand-to-hand combat. Still, to a large protective shield carried by a shield-bearer—like the one described in 1 Samuel 17:7. This kind of shield offered full-body protection from flying arrows and stones, allowing the soldier to advance safely.
In poetic language, the Lord becomes our shield-bearer, standing before us in the battle of life.
This realisation fosters deeper trust: “In Him my heart trusts, and I am helped.”
The result? Joy and worship that flow from a heart strengthened by faith: “My heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to Him.”
When we recognise God as our protector and deliverer, worship becomes more than a ritual—it becomes a natural outpouring of gratitude. There is no comparison to worship that rises from a soul fully surrendered to the One who shields and sustains.
ACT ON IT
Pause today and reflect on how the Lord has shielded you. Let that memory fuel your trust. Move forward with confidence—your Shield goes before you. And let your heart respond in joyful thanks.
