Not Just Routine—Rediscover the Wonder
Delighting in the Word of God is a recurring theme throughout the Book of Psalms—not only in this passage but also in others such as Psalm 112:1 and 119:35, 47, and 92. The Hebrew verb translated as "delight" conveys a far deeper emotional engagement than simply "liking" or "enjoying" something.
In most of its biblical occurrences, the term expresses an intense attraction—often in romantic or aesthetic contexts. For example, Shechem, son of Hamor, "delighted" in Dinah, Jacob’s daughter (Gen 34:19). In Esther’s story, women from the king’s harem would not return to him unless he "delighted" in them (Esther 2:14). The word even describes emotional affinity between people of the same gender, as when King Saul instructed his servants to tell David that the king "delighted" in him (1 Sam 18:22).
When applied to Scripture, this word signifies more than admiration—it reflects a deep emotional draw that repeatedly draws a reader back to a treasured book. These are books with enduring appeal, not because their contents are unknown but because their value persists. Like a beloved volume on a shelf, they do not gather dust.
By contrast, many find Bible reading laborious and repetitive, like eating the same meal off the same plate daily. The adage "familiarity breeds contempt" sadly applies here. Yet, when we approach the Bible with curiosity—seeking what it reveals about God, ourselves, and the world—it becomes a source of fresh insight and renewed wonder.
Delight in Scripture arises from the conviction that it holds more than we already know, more than we expect, and more than we can exhaust. This posture transforms reading into a deeply satisfying, even delightful, experience.
Are you merely reading the Bible, or delighting in it?
Do not let familiarity dull your engagement with God’s Word. Approach it with fresh eyes, a curious heart, and the expectation that it still has something new to say. Open its pages not out of routine, but out of desire—and discover the joy of returning to a book that never grows old.
Start today. Read with delight.
Let the Word of God become your greatest attraction.
ACT ON IT
Do not let your Bible gather dust—let it stir your soul. Today, ask the Lord to rekindle your curiosity and deepen your affection for His Word. Set aside a quiet moment, open the Scriptures with expectation, and read not just for knowledge but delight. Begin with a psalm, a parable, or a promise—and allow the Spirit to draw you in again. The Word of God is not a task to complete, but a treasure to cherish. Rediscover its wonder—one verse at a time.
