DAY 4 OF 5

Day 4 – Just Keep Going

Nehemiah knew exactly what it meant to face opposition and distractions while building a God-sized dream. In chapters 4, 5, and 6 of his story, we see Sanballat and Tobiah beginning to ridicule the people, attempting to discourage them and get them to give up. They said the walls were too weak and that the Israelites would never succeed (Nehemiah 4:1-3). Does this sound familiar? How many times have we, too, faced criticism or difficulties and wondered if continuing was really worth it?

But watch what Nehemiah does: in the face of those negative voices, he returns to the fundamental principle from day one—he prays. He doesn’t react with anger, nor does he panic. Instead, he simply asks God to protect him and avenge him, then he continues working. In other words, he constantly returns to the source of his strength and keeps his eyes fixed on the ultimate goal (Nehemiah 4:4-6).

You might find yourself having to work "with one hand on your project and the other hand defending the vision" (Nehemiah 4:17). Sometimes you'll need to build and protect yourself from distractions, criticism, or discouragement at the same time. Don’t worry—this is perfectly normal. If your dream is significant, expect challenges precisely because what you're building is important for God’s Kingdom.

Nehemiah was so focused that he responded powerfully when Sanballat repeatedly tried to distract him: "I am doing a great work and cannot come down" (Nehemiah 6:3). This phrase can become your response, too, whenever someone or something tries to pull you away from the project God entrusted to you.

Consider this: Nehemiah worked on the wall for more than twelve years. That’s a long time, isn’t it? It would have been humanly easy to get discouraged and give up, yet he persevered. You'll face criticism and obstacles as well. Some people might never understand your vision, possibly because God didn’t give it to them—He gave it to you. And that's okay. Never allow someone else’s limitations or lack of understanding to influence your determination.

Always remember that your project’s impact is far bigger than yourself. Persevering matters not just for you but also for all the people God intends to bless through your work. Always return to prayer, ignore the distractions, and just keep going—one step at a time. Your dream matters, and it is worth every ounce of effort.

Reflection Questions:

  • Which voices of distraction or discouragement are currently trying to stop you? Clearly write them down so you can identify them and confront them through prayer.
  • Who can help you stay focused and not give up when things get tough? Think of a specific person who can support you on your journey.

Practical Tip: Write Nehemiah’s words on a sticky note: "I am doing a great work and cannot come down" (Nehemiah 6:3), and place it somewhere visible every day. Use it as a daily encouragement and a reminder of your determination.

Prayer: Lord, today I ask You to give me the determination and perseverance You gave Nehemiah. Help me ignore distractions and criticism, remembering that I am doing important work for You. Grant me strength, courage, and focus to keep going without giving up. Amen.
