Holy Wednesday: A Quiet Day of Preparation
Holy Wednesday is often called a “silent day” because the Gospels don’t record much about what Jesus did on this day. But even though it seemed quiet, there was a lot going on behind the scenes. Jesus stayed in Bethany, preparing for the Last Supper, while the religious leaders were planning how to get rid of Him.
By now, Jesus’ popularity had grown so much that the religious leaders were worried. They feared that if He continued, He would take away their power. They decided they had to find a way to arrest Him. The answer came when Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, agreed to betray Him for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16). With Judas' help, they knew exactly where to find Jesus, and they no longer needed to search for Him.
At the same time, in Bethany, Mary anointed Jesus with expensive perfume, showing her love and devotion to Him (John 12:1-8). She didn’t know it, but her act of kindness was preparing Jesus for His death. Jesus saw this as a special moment, recognizing that Mary was honoring Him in a way no one else had.
While others were busy planning and scheming, Jesus continued His mission, calmly preparing for what was ahead. This day reminds us that even when life seems quiet or still, God is at work behind the scenes, preparing things for the future.
Reflection:
Even when we don’t see it, God is always working in our lives. How can we trust God and stay faithful, even in quiet moments when we can’t see what’s happening next?
Prayer:
God, thank You for working in my life, even when I can’t see it. Help me trust You, especially when things seem quiet or uncertain. I know You have a plan for me, and I trust that You are preparing me for what’s to come. Amen.
