Day 3: Seeking the Author's Intent

Scripture: 2 Peter 1:20-21 - "Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."

Reflection:

We must seek to understand the author's original intent when interpreting Scripture. What message were they trying to communicate to their audience? How did the Holy Spirit guide them? Understanding the author's intent helps us to grasp the true meaning of the text and to apply it accurately to our lives.

Seeking the author's intent involves asking questions such as: Who wrote the passage? To whom was it written? What was the purpose of the writing? What was the cultural and historical context? By answering these questions, we gain insight into the author's perspective and the message they wanted to convey.

As we seek the author's intent, we are reminded of the divine inspiration of Scripture. We recognize that the authors were guided by the Holy Spirit, speaking God's truth to their audience. We approach the Bible with reverence and awe, knowing that it is God's Word to us.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, guide us as we seek to understand the author's intent in each passage of Scripture. Help us to discern the message that you want us to receive. Amen.

Application:

1. Ask Questions: Ask questions about the author, audience, purpose, and context of each passage to gain insight into the author's intent.
2. Recognize Divine Inspiration: Acknowledge the divine inspiration of Scripture, knowing that the authors were guided by the Holy Spirit.
3. Apply the Message: Look for ways to apply the author's intended message to your life, allowing it to shape your thoughts and actions.
