In 2 Samuel, we have the last public words of David, the warrior, the king, the poet, the prophet. The subject of these words? God’s covenant, a covenant which is David’s whole salvation and every desire. With the betrayal of his family, the pressure from his enemies, and the tests of his kingdom, David fills the book of Psalms with cries for deliverance, justice, and protection. But at the end we learn what is behind all of it. David’s last word, his whole life, is a cry for God’s own heart.
