Rest

We read in Exodus the commandment: keep Shabbat, come to rest.

In a world where noise and hurry never seem to stop, that command still matters. We often talk about freedom in Christ, but true freedom includes the ability to stop, to rest, and to enjoy God’s presence.

Connection with God

The rhythm of six days of work and one day of rest was not given by accident. God designed it for our good. He knows how easily people drift into striving, distraction, and exhaustion. Rest is his invitation to return – to reconnect with him and with others.

Rest doesn’t just mean doing nothing. It is about creating space for renewal: to worship, to celebrate, to be present. In The Chosen, Mary experiences this kind of rest during her Shabbat meal. And Jesus joins her there! When we take up His invitation to rest, He is only too happy to join us, too!

Choosing Rest

Everyone longs for rest, and that rest is available. Rest is a gift. It reminds us that the world keeps turning even when we stop. What would happen if one day each week became a sacred pause? No phone, no work, no endless scrolling – just presence, gratitude, and worship.

Sabbath rest is not about restriction; it’s about renewal. It’s a rhythm that restores the soul and re-centers life on what truly matters.

Reflection Questions

  • How can you enjoy a day with only things that lead you to rest, celebrate, worship, being?
  • How do you think having a weekly day of rest would affect you?

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You are a God of rest. Teach me to stop striving and to find peace in your presence. Help me make space for worship, joy, and renewal. Amen.
