Going Places

DAY 3 OF 28

[IMAGE CONTENT] Every airplane has oxygen masks stored in the ceiling. If the cabin pressure in the plane drops, the pilot will tell everyone to put their oxygen masks on so that they can have the oxygen that they need to breathe. But there's one rule the pilot will ask everyone to follow. If you're traveling with a little kid or someone who can't put their own mask on, you're supposed to put your own oxygen mask on first, and then help them with their mask. There's a simple reason for this rule: it's going to be a lot easier for you to help others if you've got everything you need. It's not enough for you to just take care of your own mask and ignore everyone around you, but you also can't just help everyone else and forget about putting on your own mask. You've got to do both. It's the same way the Bible asks us to look out for our own friends. We can't just look out for our own needs. We've also got to help other people with what they need. We don't have to pick between either caring for someone else or caring for ourselves. We can do both. Sometimes, we wait to really care for someone else when they've proved that they care for us first. When writing to the Philippians, Paul writes that true friendship is making sure we're looking out for others in our life just as much as we're looking out for ourselves.
