Day 4: Jesus and the Temple Tax - Trusting God to Meet Our Obligations If Jesus had a bank account, would He stress over taxes and bills like the rest of us? As a follower of Jesus in today's world, you're likely no stranger to financial obligations such as taxes, bills, and debts. Just like the ancient temple tax, these modern-day financial responsibilities can make you feel uncertain, especially when resources are limited. In moments like these, you might wonder how Jesus would handle these situations and find yourself hoping for a miraculous solution. In Matthew 17:24-27, we see Jesus faced with the dilemma of paying the temple tax. When questioned about it, Jesus uses the opportunity to teach His disciples about the nature of His kingdom. Although He is not obligated to pay the tax as the Son of God, He chooses to do so to avoid causing offense. To provide for this need, Jesus instructs Peter to go fishing and promises that he will find a coin in the mouth of the first fish he catches—a coin sufficient to cover the tax for both of them. This story teaches us that God knows our financial obligations and is faithful to provide for them when we trust in Him. It also highlights the importance of seeking God's guidance in all aspects of our financial lives, including meeting our responsibilities. Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Jesus, who showed us how to trust in Your provision, even in fulfilling our financial obligations. Help us to seek Your guidance in every aspect of our financial lives and to trust You to provide for our needs.
