Making Changes for the Adventure

Our experience of this Lent adventure can get better when we intentionally make changes for it. We do this when we choose a specific time and place to pray every day. On this Lent adventure, we’re invited to fast from something, give up something which gives us comfort.

Dallas Willard says, “We fast so we can feast on Jesus.”

You can decide to give up things like chocolate, coffee, milkshakes, social media or Netflix, and replace it with activities like reading a Christian book, talking to someone about Jesus or even doing an act of kindness that serves someone else.

Each time you feel the urge to grab onto this comfort you’ve given up, it’s an invitation to turn to Jesus and find comfort in Him instead.

Another helpful tool can be to keep an adventure journal for Lent which you can write in each day. Let your day run through your imagination, like a film, and think about what happened in your heart that day. Pick one thing that gave you life, and one thing which was difficult for you, and write them down.

When you make these changes, be sure to have a lot of grace and patience with yourself. Remember, both realistic and generous is how we decide. If you miss it, start again. The goal is to adventure with Jesus, an adventure on which we’re always beginners.
