LENT - a Journey for Teens: The Places We Go

Jealousy and Envy

Jealousy is to be afraid of losing a relationship, or even a part of a relationship, which means a lot to you.

Envy is to want something someone else has.

Envy says “I want what you have, and I don’t want you to have it. I might even want you to suffer the loss of it”.

We can make jokes about envy and jealousy, and even pay someone a compliment by saying, “I’m so jealous of you”. We can fall for social media posts and advertisements that are geared towards making us dissatisfied, BUT we will be left with the effect of feeling envy and jealousy.

Jer 6:14 says, “You can’t heal a wound by saying it’s not there”. So before we can beat evil with good, we need to admit to it and accept that we have envy and jealousy in our lives.

Exercise:

Ask yourself the following questions and try to be as honest as possible (ask Jesus to help you and to reveal your heart):

- Do I have a fear that something of great worth is going to be taken away from me by someone?

- Do I want something someone else has?

- Can I confess my envy and jealousy to God and start moving with Him towards thinking differently about my life?

Prayer:

Loving Heavenly Father, I confess the envy and jealousy I have towards _________.

Help me to think differently about my life, help me to be transformed and set free from envy and jealousy.

Remind me of the good I have and make me grateful for it. In Jesus' Name, Amen!
