Paul opens this section by urging the church to “live in order to please God, as in fact you are living.” What’s striking is that he’s not scolding them—he’s encouraging them. They’re already on the right track, but Paul says there’s still room to “do this more and more.” Following Jesus isn’t about perfection in one big leap; it’s about consistent, daily steps of growth. There’s always more God wants to shape in us, not because He’s hard to please, but because He loves us enough to keep transforming us.

He also reminds them that what he’s teaching isn’t just human advice—it’s instruction “through the Lord Jesus.” In other words, this isn’t Paul’s opinion; it’s God’s call. And that shifts the weight of it. Living to please God isn’t about earning His love—it’s our response to already being loved. It’s about aligning our lives with the One who knows us best and gave everything for us.

Don’t settle where you are. Ask God today, “Where do you want me to grow more and more?” Let Him highlight one area where you can take your next step of obedience and trust Him with it.
