The Baptism of the Holy Spirit: What is it?
On the 50th day after the first day of Passover, the apostles gathered in Jerusalem for the pilgrimage festival known in Greek as Pentecost. While they were together, the Holy Spirit came upon each of them with a rushing wind and flames of fire - they were immersed or baptised in the Holy Spirit. This baptism gave them access to the Holy Spirit and His power in a way they had not yet known, even when they walked with Jesus himself. From the New Testament, we learn that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is available to all who believe today - both Jews (the apostles) and the Gentiles (Cornelius and his household). It is a free gift of God’s grace, that may be experienced immediately at conversion or at a later time. But the defining characteristic of this baptism is that it gives a believer the power they need to fulfill Jesus’ kingdom mission. It was only when the apostles received power that they could be a witness to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth. Supernatural power for a supernatural mission. And this power is available to you today.
Reflection Questions:
- What has been your understanding of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
- Do you think you are living out or experiencing the supernatural power you need for the supernatural mission God has assigned to you?
