Love God Greatly - the Savior Who Comes Near: A Study on the Nearness of God From the Manger to the Cross

DAY 5 OF 7

Week 1 / He Came Near in the Manger (The Miracle of Christ’s Birth)

The Word Became Flesh

Read: John 1:1-14

SOAP: John 1:14

"Now the Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We saw his glory—the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth, who came from the Father." (NET)

Into the Text

John 1:14 is one of the most stunning truths in all of Scripture: The Word became flesh. The holy, eternal, and infinite God chose to wrap Himself in human skin and step into our broken world.

God didn't send someone else. He came Himself.

Look again at the first verses of John 1. Jesus, the Word who was with God in the beginning, is God. He is the Creator who made everything. John doubles down on this important truth by stressing that nothing that was created came into being apart from Jesus.

God made sure that we were not left wondering what He is like. In Jesus, the unseen and eternal God stepped from heaven into our three-dimensional world.

In Jesus, God has revealed His character, His holiness, His love, and His mercy. When we see Jesus as portrayed in the Gospels, we see God Himself. John, as one of the eye-witnesses, proclaims that by being with Jesus, He saw the fullness of God's glory and the heart of the Father.

This is why Christmas matters so much. It's not just a celebration of Jesus' birth. It's a celebration of God coming near to us. Sometimes, especially during the busy Christmas season, it's easy to let the wonder of this truth grow dim. Pause for a moment and let this truth sink in.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for trading heaven for earth so that I might know you and be near to you. Help me not to rush past the wonder of your nearness today. Amen.
