Love God Greatly - the Savior Who Comes Near: A Study on the Nearness of God From the Manger to the Cross

DAY 4 OF 7

Week 1 / He Came Near in the Manger (The Miracle of Christ’s Birth)

Good News of Great Joy

Read: Luke 2:1-20

SOAP: Luke 2:10-11

"But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid! Listen carefully, for I proclaim to you good news that brings great joy to all the people: Today your Savior is born in the city of David. He is Christ the Lord." (NET)

Into the Text

In the still, dark fields outside of Bethlehem, God chose to reveal His glory—not to kings or scholars—but to shepherds. These men were considered to be the lowest of society.

Suddenly, heaven broke through. An angel appeared, and the glory of the Lord surrounded them. Everything changed in the blink of an eye.

"Do not be afraid…" the angel began. This was the same message given to Mary and Joseph. Now, the same reassurance was extended to a group of dirty and isolated shepherds.

Then came the best news ever. The Savior had been born! The long-awaited Messiah was born—not someday but today in the town of David. He didn’t come just for the elite or the worthy but for all people.

The shepherds immediately ran off to find Him. When they did, they were so overwhelmed by what they saw and heard that they couldn't help but tell others. Isn't that what joy does? It overflows. It spills out. It turns ordinary people into messengers of extraordinary joy. Joy just can't be contained, and it isn't meant to.

The same good news the shepherds heard thousands of years ago is the same good news for us today. Jesus has come. Our Savior is here. God is near. And because of that, we don't have to be afraid. His birth brings joy that nothing in this world can take away.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for coming near so many years ago. Help me to receive this good news and to share it joyfully and freely, just like the shepherds did. Amen.
