DAY 9 OF 30

Rejoicing in Carrot Sticks

The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. Psalm 19:8 (NIV)

True confession time.

I love fast food.

I know it’s not good for me, but I was raised eating it, and to me it signals comfort food, a special treat, and simply what’s familiar.

If it were just a matter of my taste buds, I could eat fast food every day.

These days, it’s rare for me to eat fast food, and when I do, I usually opt for a salad or grilled chicken sandwich. Besides eating healthier, we are a family of seven people, and even a simple trip to McDonald’s costs as much as several days’ worth of groceries.

There’s no harm in fast food occasionally, but it can’t be a regular occurrence.

When I first started eating healthier foods, my heart wasn’t in it. I wanted fast food, junk food, and all my familiar treats. I didn’t want to eat salad.

After all, who rejoices over carrot sticks?

Yet listen to what today’s Bible reading says, “…the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.”

Does your heart rejoice with eating fresh, healthy, whole foods? Gradually, my taste buds have adjusted, and these days I look forward to wholesome foods that taste great and help me feel amazing.

I challenge you to rejoice over the healthy food choices you make today.

Reflection: Do you enjoy healthy foods? Which ones? Rejoice over the fact that you like them.

Prayer: Lord, help me be thankful for the abundance of healthy foods I have available to me. Change my taste buds to crave wholesome foods that give me energy rather than drag me down. Thank you for providing for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
