How to Make Disciples That Make Disciplesნიმუში

Day 3: Question Asking
Devotional
Jesus asked 307 questions.
He was asked 184 - and directly answered only 3. Think about that for a moment.
Jesus didn’t disciple by lecturing. He discipled by asking. His questions pierced through people, stirred the heart, and created space for people to discover what they truly believed. Think of the rich young ruler: “Why do you call me good?” or blind Bartimaeus: “What do you want me to do for you?” or Peter: “Who do you say I am?”
Good questions open doors. They don’t push. They invite.
As a discipler, your job is not to give all the answers - it’s to ask the kind of questions that help someone else find their own answers. When we ask well, we’re saying: I see you. I’m listening. Let’s go deeper. It’s not about being clever; it’s not even about being curious. It’s about encouraging the disciple to wrestle with their own understanding. To help them process their thoughts and feelings in a supported way. And ultimately, to point them towards Jesus.
This takes practice. We often want to fix or teach or share our wisdom. Resist that impulse. Jesus didn’t start conversations with answers. He started with questions that led to encounter.
Today, reflect on your own posture. Are you someone who listens to respond, or listens to understand? Can you ask without an agenda? Can you trust the Holy Spirit to guide your questions even more than your answers?
Discipleship is not about knowing more than the person you're walking with. It's about creating space where the Spirit can speak—and questions often open that space.
Reflection Questions
- How do you feel about asking questions rather than giving answers?
- When someone last shared something personal with you, did you ask or advise?
- What might Jesus be teaching you through the way he asked questions?
Prayer for them
Jesus, soften [name’s] heart to explore. May they feel safe to answer honestly, vulnerably, and openly in our conversations. Amen.
Prayer for me
Lord, make me a good question-asker. Give me wisdom, patience, and courage to ask questions that lead to truth. Help me listen and ask well, and to trust You with the answers. Amen.
About this Plan
