How to Make Disciples That Make Disciples

DAY 2 OF 7

Day 2: Making Time and Space

Devotional

This kind of discipleship doesn’t happen by accident; it’s always intentional.

Jesus didn’t just “bump into” the disciples now and then. He invited them to follow him, shared meals with them, withdrew with them, and made space in His everyday life for relationship. If you’re going to disciple someone, the first and most practical question is: where in your life can you make space?

Look at your calendar. You might want to get it up now. Look at your week. Not just your ideal week, but your actual week. Between studies, work, social life, and (hopefully) rest, where is the space? The truth is, most of us don’t “find” time for the things that matter. We make time. That’s what Jesus did. He went out of his way to sit with the Samaritan woman by the well. He deliberately invited 12 people into his life to walk with him. This is what you are invited to do too.

Availability doesn’t mean being constantly accessible or saying yes to everything. Having good boundaries is really important. It means choosing to create space to walk with someone intentionally, regularly, and meaningfully. Making space once a fortnight can be life-changing. But the key is consistency.

This isn’t about squeezing someone into your spare time. It’s about giving someone your best time.

So today’s reflection is practical: identify the space you could offer. Be honest with yourself. What will need to shift? What will you need to say no to, in order to say yes to this? The cost of discipleship is real - but so is the fruit.

Reflection Questions

  • What does your calendar reveal about your priorities?
  • Where is there space in your week to meet with someone regularly?
  • What needs to shift to make space for discipleship?
  • Are you willing to protect that space?

Prayer for them

Jesus, I pray for [name’s] time as well as mine. Prepare their schedule. Open doors in their calendar. Help us find a rhythm that works for both of us and honours You. Amen.

Prayer for me

Lord, help me offer my time with generosity and purpose. Show me what to cut, what to commit to, and how to make space for what You have asked me to do. Amen.
