Keep the End in Mind - Proverbs 5
Most chapters in the book of Proverbs address a variety of different subjects. Many different issues are covered in some chapters, like a wisdom buffet for living. Other chapters deal with just one subject, like chapter 5. It has a singular focus. The heading over chapter 5 in my Bible is “Warning Against Adultery.” It doesn’t mince words. It’s good to read the whole book of Proverbs because you won’t miss out on the warnings that can save your soul.
This chapter’s three most important words are “in the end.” We would be wise to always live with the end in mind. It’s an important principle – an important exercise in life – to think about what will happen if you take the step you are about to take. Is this a wise thing for me to do? It’s important to remember that we have an enemy, the devil, who seeks to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). Of course, like the young man in this chapter, the moment’s pleasure is the real problem. A moment or season of pleasure will often bring a bitter end. Visualize the destruction that could occur if you choose what you now desire over what God wants for your life. Be strong and keep the end in mind!
“Father, give me the strength to say no to any temptation that would cause me to dishonor You or lose my integrity. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
