Dio il SIGNORE prese dunque l’uomo e lo pose nel giardino di Eden perché lo lavorasse e lo custodisse. Dio il SIGNORE ordinò all’uomo: «Mangia pure da ogni albero del giardino, ma dell’albero della conoscenza del bene e del male non ne mangiare; perché nel giorno che tu ne mangerai, certamente morirai». Poi Dio il SIGNORE disse: «Non è bene che l’uomo sia solo; io gli farò un aiuto che sia adatto a lui». Dio il SIGNORE, avendo formato dalla terra tutti gli animali dei campi e tutti gli uccelli del cielo, li condusse all’uomo per vedere come li avrebbe chiamati, e perché ogni essere vivente portasse il nome che l’uomo gli avrebbe dato. L’uomo diede dei nomi a tutto il bestiame, agli uccelli del cielo e ad ogni animale dei campi; ma per l’uomo non si trovò un aiuto che fosse adatto a lui. Allora Dio il SIGNORE fece cadere un profondo sonno sull’uomo, che si addormentò; prese una delle costole di lui e richiuse la carne al posto d’essa. Dio il SIGNORE, con la costola che aveva tolta all’uomo, formò una donna e la condusse all’uomo. L’uomo disse: «Questa, finalmente, è ossa delle mie ossa e carne della mia carne. Ella sarà chiamata donna perché è stata tratta dall’uomo». Perciò l’uomo lascerà suo padre e sua madre e si unirà a sua moglie, e saranno una stessa carne. L’uomo e sua moglie erano entrambi nudi e non ne avevano vergogna.
