Io scopro allora questa contraddizione: ogni volta che voglio fare il bene, trovo in me soltanto la capacità di fare il male. Nel mio intimo io sono d'accordo con la legge di Dio, ma vedo in me un’altra Legge: quella che contrasta fortemente la Legge che la mia mente approva, e che mi rende schiavo della legge del peccato che abita in me. Eccomi, dunque, con la mente pronto a servire la legge di Dio, mentre, di fatto, servo la legge del peccato. Me infelice! La mia condizione di uomo peccatore mi trascina verso la morte: chi mi libererà? Rendo grazie a Dio che mi libera per mezzo di Gesù Cristo, nostro Signore.
