Avoiding Pain
In 2 Corinthians 7:9 (NKJV), Paul writes, “Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance.” This verse reminds us that even emotional pain can serve a higher purpose when it brings us closer to God. Pain, whether physical or emotional, often prompts us to pause, reflect, and seek God’s guidance. Just as trials refine our faith (James 1:2–4), pain can be a tool for spiritual growth, teaching us dependence on God and shaping us into stronger, more compassionate individuals. Emotional pain may open our hearts to forgiveness and healing, while physical pain may remind us of the need to care for our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
To live a healthier life despite pain, the Bible encourages us to embrace both physical and spiritual practices that promote wholeness. Isaiah 41:10 (NIV) assures us, “So do not fear, for I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you.” Prayer, gratitude, and casting our cares on God (1 Peter 5:7) relieve stress that burdens the body and mind. Physically, we can follow God’s provision of wholesome foods (Genesis 1:29), rest as He commanded (Exodus 20:8–10), and seek community support, for “Two are better than one” (Ecclesiastes 4:9 NIV). By addressing pain with both faith and healthy daily habits, we allow God to transform suffering into strength and peace, leading us into fuller health and well-being.
One of the first things you can do today to “avoid” physical pain, is to delete sugar from your diet, and consider adding flax oil to your salad dressing. Here are three additional steps:
Physical Step – Nourish and Care for Your Body
Eat whole, God-given foods and stay active to strengthen your body. “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:3 NIV). Even gentle exercise like walking can relieve pain and lift your mood.
Emotional Step – Release Stress Through Gratitude and Connection
Start and end your day by naming blessings, big or small, to shift focus from pain to God’s goodness. “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV). Share burdens with trusted loved ones, since “Two are better than one” (Ecclesiastes 4:9 NIV).
Spiritual Step – Seek God in Prayer and His Word
Bring your pain honestly before God in prayer, asking for strength and peace. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7 NIV). Reading Scripture daily renews the mind and brings healing comfort (Psalm 107:20).
