Devotional for New Believers

DAY 1 OF 7

PRINCIPLE: NEW IDENTITY IN CHRIST

When we surrender our lives to Jesus as Lord, the Bible says that we’re born again and are given a new identity!

Our identity is not what we do, how we feel or our relationship status; our identity is who God says we are in His Word, the Bible.

The reason it’s so important to understand our identity in Christ is because our identity precedes our activity. In other words, who we are precedes what we do and our position in Christ precedes our practice on earth.

“People cannot consistently behave in ways that are inconsistent with the way they perceive themselves... If you think you are a no-good bum, you will probably live like a no-good bum. If however, you see yourself as a child of God who is spiritually alive in Christ you will begin to live accordingly. Next to a knowledge of God, a knowledge of who you are is by far the most important truth you can possess.”
- Neil Anderson, Victory over the Darkness

Below are some examples of “I am” statements that reflect our new identity, in Christ:

  • I am a child of God. (John 1:12)
  • I am free from condemnation. (Romans 8:1)
  • I am the salt and light of the earth. (Matthew 5:13-14)
  • I am God’s workmanship. (Ephesians 2:10)
  • I am a citizen of heaven. (Philippians 3:20)
  • I am seated with Christ in the heavenly realm. (Ephesians 2:6)
  • I am redeemed and forgiven of all my sins. (Colossians 1:14)
