Overwhelmed, but Not Alone: A 5-Day Devotional for the Weary Mom

DAY 4 OF 5

Day 4: Christ wants to help.

When you’re going through an overwhelming season, remember that the Lord Jesus may not always calm the storms of life, but He will always help you get through them. He’s had practice, after all. He’s not only the God who walked on water and calmed the seas, but He’s also the One who continues to reach down, pulling you up when you’re drowning. He never asks you to strive. He only asks you to trust. His grace is sufficient for both today and tomorrow.

Because He sees you, hears you, and fully empathizes with your struggles, you can echo the words of Hebrews 4:16, “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” He doesn’t just acknowledge your overwhelm. He does something about it.

Through His teachings and by His example, you can find purpose and order in your days. You can draw from His strength, patience, and endurance. When you need His supernatural help, remember the following:

He has left you His Word, which can help you conquer any fear you may have, overcome any anxiety you’re holding onto, and refocus your attention on your eternal hope of Heaven even in a seemingly hopeless situation.

He has left you His Spirit to help you grow in discernment, provide you with solace, and bring peace when it feels like the sky is falling.

He has also left you a community of fellow Christ followers who can surround you with care and consolation.

Every time you come boldly, casting all your cares and anxieties on Him (1 Peter 5:7), you whisper, “God, I’m trusting You to make more out of my time and effort than I could on my own. I’m claiming Your unshakeable peace in my overwhelm.”

Reflect:

1.When was the last time you boldly asked Christ for help? How did He respond? What was the outcome?

2.Which of Christ’s “helps” do you find easiest to rely on in overwhelming times: His Word, His Spirit, or His people? Why?

Pray:

Comforter, thank you for Your sufficiency. When I am not able, You are always able. Thank You for providing Your Word, Your Spirit, and Your people. When I am weak, may I always remember that you are strong. Please bring purpose and order to my overwhelming days. In Christ’s powerful name, I pray, amen.

Meditate:

Hebrews 4:16, “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (ESV).

About this Plan

Overwhelmed, but Not Alone: A 5-Day Devotional for the Weary Mom

Moms are shape-shifters that change from being chefs to doctors to janitors to judges to teachers to plumbers to therapists to hostage negotiators and back again, all before breakfast. We play more parts than a one-man band. No wonder we feel so overwhelmed and alone. Except we’re not. God sees our struggles, hears our cries, and wants to help by redeeming whatever feels broken and bent in our lives. Jamie Erickson offers real-life encouragement for women in the thick of motherhood.
