RETURN to ME: Reading With the People of God #16

DAY 26 OF 31

The Fall and the Faithful

Today’s readings confront us with the reality of falling kingdoms and the faithful call to prepare for what’s ahead. In Nahum 2, we witness the vivid and powerful downfall of Nineveh—the once mighty city now laid bare by God’s judgment. The imagery is dramatic, reminding us that pride and cruelty will not endure against God’s justice.

In Mark 14, the scene shifts to the unfolding story of Jesus’ final hours. We see the tension rising as Jesus is anointed with costly perfume—a sign of honor and preparation for His burial—and He shares the Passover with His disciples, instituting the Lord’s Supper. It’s a moment filled with both intimacy and impending sacrifice.

Both passages invite us to consider: How do we respond when the old order falls? Do we recognize the faithful path Jesus calls us to walk, even when it leads through hardship and sacrifice?

Prayer:
Lord, grant me courage to follow You faithfully, even when the way is hard. Help me trust Your justice and mercy, and prepare my heart to receive Your grace anew. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  • What “old orders” in my life or community need to fall away?
  • In what ways does the Lord’s Supper remind me of Jesus’ sacrifice and love for me?

About this Plan

RETURN to ME: Reading With the People of God #16

This 16th installment of our Reading with the People of God plan invites you into the voices of the Minor Prophets—Hosea through Nahum—calling God’s people to return with sincerity and trust. Paired with the Gospel of Mark, we’ll hear Christ’s invitation to repentance and renewed faith. Each day includes readings from Psalms, the Old Testament, and the New Testament, with a brief devotional primer. May these readings draw you nearer to the Lord, awaken your heart to His mercy, and echo His faithful call: “Return to Me.”
