Heaven (Part 3)

DAY 1 OF 10

You’re No Angel!

Over the years, I’ve often heard people refer to their loved ones in Heaven as angels. It’s a heartfelt sentiment and a reflection of how deeply we want to honour and remember those we’ve lost.

But as we begin the final part of our series on Heaven, it’s important to gently explore and address some of the myths that have grown around this topic.

People have deep and important questions that I have been answering about heaven: 'What it’s like?; ‘What will we do there?’; and ‘What happens to our loved ones who’ve gone before us?’

Today, I want to look at what the Bible says about this particular question – 'Do our loved ones become angels?’ – and uncover the truth about the incredible hope that Heaven holds for all who know Jesus.

It’s a comforting thought that our loved ones become angels when they pass away, but the Bible offers an even more beautiful truth – one that brings incredible hope.

The answer is they don’t become angels!

Angels are powerful, spiritual beings created by God to serve Him. Throughout history, they’ve delivered messages (see Luke 1:26-38), provided protection (see Psalm 91:11), and praised God with heavenly choirs (see Luke 2:13-14).

In Heaven, angels continue their roles of worshipping God (see Revelation 5:11-12) and conducting His divine plans.

But angels are distinct from humans. When someone who trusts in Jesus passes away, they don’t become an angel. Instead, they are welcomed into God’s presence as His beloved children, fully restored and filled with joy (see Revelation 21:3-4).

That is so much more wonderful than becoming an angel!

Will we interact with angels in Heaven? Most definitely, yes! Angels will join us in worshipping God (see Hebrews 12:22), but the greatest joy of Heaven won’t be about angels, it will be about being with God Himself.

Imagine being in the presence of the One who created you, loves you, and has prepared a place for you!

This is the hope Jesus offers. Through His death and resurrection, He made the way for us to be with Him forever, a promise of peace, joy, and restoration for all who put their trust in Him.

So, let’s hold on to this truth today. Our loved ones don’t become angels, they experience something even greater: eternal life with God. One day, we’ll join them in that perfect, unending joy.

Remember the reply we've mentioned all through our study. You have to answer the RSVP!

You have to accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour and be forgiven of your sin to one day join Him in Heaven.

Reflect

  • What was your perception of angels before reading today's devotion?
  • Has your perception of them been challenged or changed by what you've just read?
  • Have you answered Jesus' invitation to accept Him as your Saviour? (If not, could today be the day for you to reply to Him?)

Pray

Father God, thank You that our hope in Heaven is greater than becoming angels; we are Your beloved children, welcomed into Your presence forever. Help me live in that truth and rejoice in Your promise. I pray for opportunities to share this promise with those around me, so they too can experience this eternal joy. Amen.
