Renewing Your Heart for Ministry

DAY 2 OF 7

Day 2: Jesus Actually Wants Your Mess

I'll never forget the Sunday morning I broke down in my car after service. I'd just preached about God's love and faithfulness, but inside I felt like a fraud. The weight of everyone's expectations, the financial pressures at home, the hot criticism from a few church members—it all came crashing down. I sat there thinking, "How can I tell people about Jesus when I feel this broken?"

Maybe you've been there too. The beautiful thing is, Jesus already knows about our mess—and He's not shocked by it.

Sarah Young, who wrote "Jesus Calling," experienced something similar while serving as a missionary in Japan. The cultural barriers, language struggles, and overwhelming ministry pressures sent her into severe anxiety and depression. Instead of pretending everything was fine, she started having daily conversations with Jesus about her real struggles. Not polished prayers, but honest, messy conversations. This practice didn't just restore her emotional health—it became the foundation for devotional writing that has encouraged millions.

Here's what I wish someone had told me earlier: Jesus' invitation to "come" isn't just for salvation—it's for every overwhelming Tuesday, every discouraging setback, every moment when you feel like you're drowning.

Ann Voskampsays it beautifully: "The invitation to 'come' is not a one-time event but a daily rhythm. Jesus doesn't just want our conversion; He wants our conversation." And Tim Keller adds, "We often try to carry burdens that were never meant for our shoulders. The Christian life is learning the art of burden-swapping with Jesus."

The word "gentle" in this verse literally means "meek"—not weak, but power under control. Jesus won't steamroll you or demand you get your act together before coming to Him. He's gentle with your bruised heart.

Your Turn: Here's something tangible you can do right now. Write down three specific burdens you're carrying in ministry—be specific. Maybe it's a difficult person, a financial worry, or that nagging feeling that you're not enough. Hold that paper in your hands and pray, "Jesus, I'm giving these to You. Show me what You want me to carry today and what You want to carry for me." Keep this paper somewhere visible as a reminder that these burdens now belong to Him.
