Center of It All

DAY 3 OF 4

I remember about 10 years ago, I was sitting down in church in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, as my friend taught, and he said something that reframed the way I interacted with God. To paraphrase his teaching, he said that the first word about us in scripture is not that we are sinners in need of a savior, not that we are evil or wretched, but that God crafted us in his image and it was good. It was like a switch flipped. In a moment, I went from seeing myself in some distorted funhouse mirror of sin and shame to a reflection of the almighty. We often assume God looks at us and thinks the same things we think of ourselves. Seeing only our flaws, what we lack, our past. But God crafted you in his image, and he delights in you. What a liberating thing to know that God is not awaiting your every mistake to prove your worthlessness, but instead views you as a reflection of himself. A work of his own hand, of immeasurable worth.

When Shelly showed me her idea for this song, I was instantly reminded of this lesson and how the author and creator of all things has invited me to be a part of his divine story. This song is a reminder that our creator desires to walk with us, that not only do we get to witness his masterful work, but we’re invited to take part in it. We get to praise him, to experience his majesty, to rest in his presence because he loves us.
