Fan the Flame - a Journey Through Acts

DAY 38 OF 49

Day 38 - Paul in Athens

A few years ago I was blessed to be able to do a study tour in Greece and Türkiye to follow the steps of Paul. We went to Athens and specifically the area where today’s passage is in. Looking at the architecture it is clear to see what Paul did in these verses –the whole area is filled with worship to their gods. From the temples, to carvings and buildings, the sheer number of gods on display is astounding and it is clear that those who came to Athens had a spiritual hunger, but did not know Christ, who is the only one who meets that need.

We also live in a time where the spiritual hunger is great, and supernaturalism is gaining popularity, particularly amongst the younger generations. Just like in Paul’s day, people are seeking, and just like Paul, we who have found the truth of this life-giving relationship with God will have our hearts moved by this reality.

Paul takes the opportunity in Athens to share the gospel, and we get to read how he went about it. Firstly, Paul meets at a place where people are willing to discuss and listen. From here he has the opportunity to further explain the gospel. As Paul shares, he respectfully appeals to their acknowledgement that there is something missing in their own spiritual lives and presents the gospel with love. This is something we all can do!

Despite Paul’s ability to communicate the gospel perfectly, some thought he was nuts. I find that strangely encouraging. There were people who heard the gospel from an anointed apostle himself and walked away. That’s devastating for them, but reminds us that there is no perfect formula to ensure that when you share the gospel, people will always respond in the way you (or God) want them to. We can be so worried we will get it wrong that we remain silent, but this example is an encouragement that when we share the gospel in love, we can be free to leave the response and the responsibility for changed hearts in God’s hands. While some may walk away, others may find their moment in time to come to salvation, and it’s worth the rejection by some for that.

Let us pray that our hearts are moved by the spiritual hunger around us. Let us pray for boldness to share the good news and wisdom to do so in ways that people will hear. Let us pray that we will not be discouraged by rejection but driven by hope.

About this Plan

Fan the Flame - a Journey Through Acts

The book of Acts is an extraordinary account of God working powerfully through the early church. As well as that, it is an encouragement for us, the church today, to remember and know that God wants to work in and through us with the same power to see His kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. This plan will take you through the book of Acts, encouraging you to fan the flame of God in your heart so you can live faithfully and passionately for Jesus, declaring the gospel wherever you go!
