Video Study | Experience Jesus. Really. By John EldredgeSýnishorn

The Refuge of God
Where does Psalm 91 invite us to take refuge?
“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1)
The word for shelter can also be translated as secret place. The kind children instinctively create when they build forts—a space set apart, safe, hidden. Mystics through the ages have written about this secret place of God, some beautifully, some so vaguely that it feels unreachable. But it must be accessible, or why would He invite us in?
So where is it?
God’s heart. The very center of who He is. Just as your heart is the core of your being, the Father’s heart is His. A.W. Tozer reminds us, “God is a Person… He thinks, wills, enjoys, feels, loves, desires, and suffers.”
The secret place is not a distant metaphor. It’s a reality we can enter. A refuge that actually shelters. The presence of God is the safest place in the universe. But we have to choose it—because if we don’t, we will take refuge somewhere else.
Where have you been seeking refuge?
Reflect
- We’re meant to experience Jesus daily, not just occasionally. How often do you sense His presence? What obstacles prevent this from being your daily reality?
- Jesus calls Himself the Bread of Life (John 6:35) and the Vine (John 15:5). What do these images reveal about the relationship He wants with us?
- God's throne is real, not just a metaphor. Do the resources of His Kingdom feel more or less tangible than advice from friends, experts, or the Internet? Why?
About this Plan

In this five-part video series (each ~20 minutes), John Eldredge invites you on a journey—not to gain more knowledge, but to experience Jesus in a way that transforms your everyday life. We live in a world that constantly pulls us away from the life we were made for, bombarding us with noise, distractions, and anxiety. But Jesus offers something radically different—refuge, strength, and wonder through daily encounters with Him. Through these sessions, you’ll rediscover the reality of God’s presence, learn to take shelter in Him, and step into the deeper life you were created for.
