The Easter Story

DAY 3 OF 7

A Lesson in Humility

As Jesus’ journey to the cross continues, He shares one final meal with His disciples. But before breaking bread, Jesus does something unexpected. He kneels and washes their feet.

At that time, washing feet was a servant’s job. It was necessary due to the dusty roads and footwear of the time, but no one wanted to do it. Yet, Jesus, God in human form, chose to take on the role of a humble servant. The disciples were shocked. One of His close friends and followers, Peter, even tried to stop Him. But Jesus insisted, saying:

“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” John 13:13-14 NIV

The world tells us power is about status, influence, and being served. But Jesus showed that true greatness is found in humility and in serving others. He wasn’t just giving the disciples a lesson—He was showing them how to live.

And then, as they shared the meal, He gave them one final command:

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34 NIV

Jesus’ love wasn’t just words, it was action. He humbled Himself, served others, and ultimately laid down His life for us. That’s the kind of love we’re called to reflect.

Prayer: Jesus, You humbled Yourself to serve, even though You are the King of everything. Teach me to follow Your example—to love selflessly, serve willingly, and reflect Your heart in all I do. Amen.

Challenge: Where is God inviting you to choose humility today? Maybe it’s in how you treat a difficult person, how you serve your family, or how you put others first. Following Jesus means reflecting His love in our words and actions. For help growing in humility, try these example prayers
